∙ 9y agoThe stress on a particular plane causes cleavage in minerals. When the crystal or a part of it breaks down due to stress and the broken part retains a shape of a crystal then it is said that the mineral has cleavage.

∙ 13y agoCleavage and fracture differ in that cleavage is the break of a crystal face where a new face resulting in a smooth plane is formed, whereas fracture is the chipping of a mineral. If a mineral with cleavage is chipped a certain way, it will fracture rather than cleave. Cleavage implies a weak chemical bonding between parallel layers of atoms in a crystal.
