Convection currents are caused by heat dispersal which results in the circulation of material such as air, water, or earth's mantle. Once hot air (or gas) has begun to move, it pushes against adjacent air, mixing until that air reaches the same temperature. Just as you have a cold room with a space heater. Turn it on without a fan, and come back later, the hot air has pushed itself around and warmed the cool air around it.

Convection currents.
The convection currents running through the asthenosphere are widely believed to be the source of movement of the tectonic plates.
Convection currents in the mantle.
convection currents
Convection currents occur in the mantle, which is the middle layer of the Earth. The heat generated from the core causes the molten rock in the mantle to move in a circular pattern, creating convection currents.

Convection currents
Convection is the process that causes warm air to rise and cold air to sink. As such, the winds caused by this process are called convection currents.
