The Human Immunodeficiency Virus infects a certain class of cells (CD4+ T-cells) that are imperative in the cell mediated immune response. In AIDS, the infected individual has an unusually low T-cell count since the virus takes over these cells and makes them burst (cell lysis). This means that their immune system will be compromised and they will be disposed to oppurtunistic infections. According to wikipedia, an opportunistic infection is an infection caused by pathogens that usually do not cause disease in a healthy immune system. A compromised immune system, however, presents an "opportunity" for the pathogen to infect. So even the common cold can be devastating for an AIDS affected individual.
