usually food containing fat and carbohydrate causes caries.

improper oral hygiene also causes caries....

accumulation of plaque, food debris etc....

specially minute bacteria are involved in the formation of caries...

it appears as a black or brown spot in ur teeth and it can b easily scrapped away...

for prevention:

proper oral hygiene....

brushing twice a day

using floss n mouth wash

and using peanut sized tooth paste(as sweetness may cause caries)
