Menstruation doesn't have a bad smell per say.

The vagina has a delicate balance of pH which maintains healthy bacterial balance, the vaginal pH is normally acidic but blood changes this pH to make it more favourable to harmful bacteria - thus it can cause some odor. Most of the odor experienced during menstruation us due to the menstrual products used such as tampons which hold flow in contact with the vagina which changes pH and allow bacterial growth, or disposable pads which cause sweating and create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Odor is far less likely with options like menstrual cups or cloth menstrual pads.
