A metaporphic rock is formed when a rock is put under extreame heat and preasure for many (often thousands or millions) of years. This changes it into a new type of rock. This new rock is called a Metamorphic rock.

Different types of metamorphism include:

1. Thermal metamorphism: involving heat alone, without significant pressure effects. Normally associated with igneous intrusions, where contact metamorphism occurs.

2. Dynamic metamorphism: caused by intense local stresses which break up rocks, sometimes reducing them to a fine powder. This method produces mylonite.

3. Regional metamorphism: the large-scale action of both heat and pressure, producing a wide range of new mineral assemblages. Regional metamorphism is always associated with orogenies and igneous intrusions.

4. Retrograde metamorphism: any kind of metamorphism that produces rocks of a lower metamorphic grade from those of a higher grade.

5. Autometamorphism: this involves changes which occur during the cooling of an igneous mass, as a result of the activity of residual fluids within the mass.

1 and 3 are probably the most common and important.
