I can think of three common causes, all musculoskeletal. The first would be stress-related muscle spasms, which can be quite painful. Another option is a torn muscle, tendon or ligament. Third would be a small bone fracture. If you can, try to feel the muscles around the painful area and compare them to the muscles on the non-painful side. If you can find a hard lump, the first option above is probably what is going on. If you can find a squishy area that is warmer than the surrounding areas, the second option above is probably what happened. The third option can only be diagnosed with an X-ray, but if the problem doesn't start taking care of itself in a few days I would be tempted to have a doctor take a look at it. Less common causes can include an infection in the area, nerve damage or neuropathy and cancer - until the three above are ruled out, I wouldn't focus on these, though.
