I'll assume you mean what causes individuals to be socialist in America. America as a country is not socialist, is it a free-market capitalist state. Although a variety of policies in America have some socialist undertones, they are not representative of the majority of US policy.
As such, various individuals in America are socialist for an indefinite variety of reasons, including (but not limited to): upbringing, religion, education level, and income level. These are the same factors that tend to influence almost all opinions held by people.

Two opposing systems of government: Individual Freedom verses Socialism (Communism).
Ralph Korngold has written: 'Are there classes in America?' -- subject(s): Socialism
Socialism did not play a role in the Pilgrims' first year in America. The Pilgrims were a group of religious separatists who arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. They established a communal system of agriculture, where each person worked for the benefit of the entire community. However, this system of communal work resembled more of a religious and communal practice rather than a political ideology like socialism.
It was from Socialism that Communism was born.
Cuba is the primary example of a socialist system in North America, though Grenada, Nicaragua, and Mexico also had socialist experiments.
