What causes headers to become too hot?
Two things that i can think of right off, one is too much restriction in the exhaust system, and the other and more probable one is tune up. If the spark happens too late ( advanced ) then your valves are opening when detonation is taking place allowing the burning air/fuel mixture to enter the exhaust system, this is probably combined with a rich fuel/air mixture. Either way the engine is probably not running well, or the things that you are doing to correct one problem are causing another. Go back to timing and set it at the factory setting, then adjust the carburetor until it runs smooth.
