an air leak in your intake will cause the engine to rattle. Protege's intake hoses are prone to cracking.
Most common culprit is a slipping belt.
A large intake manifold leak. Check the boot at the throttle body.
It's either the control arm bushings or the rubber mounts for the shocks.
It may be low of lube or a bearing may be defective. Have it inspected by a professional.
Original belt? If so, the rubber's gone hard and is slipping.
i had a rattling noise in my 2000 ls, was told it was worn tensioners on timing chain. i guess they are made out of a poly carbon and wear after a while. haven't fixed problem yet...
