2 small wires coming from the OD switch in the shift lever rub the column at the base of the shift lever. Take column cover off and you will find at least 1 wire with a small rub area. Make sure you tape it up and then replace the fuze(if burned out). This will solve the problem.
If you are refering to the button on the side of the shifter then it is the overdrive on / off button.Toyo joe
Under the instrument panel on the left side ( there is a button located to the right of the fuse panel that you have to push to release the fuse panel ) according to the Owner Guide
keep the overdrive shaft button pressed, there is a panel light called "O/D" that should light indicating the overdrive is OFF. In that case make sure the light is OFF which means overdrive is ON.
check your fuses.there should be in the panel or under hood.

take out the instrument panel and it is on the top left side small bulb. but if you have more then one burnt out replace them then

The fuse for the instrument panel on a 1994 Altima is the second one up from the bottom on the left row of fuses it says electronic parts and it controls the tachometer, temp gage, fuel gage and the overdrive. It is a 10 amp fuse.
My 2012 has a rest button on left side of instrument panel
The Owner Guide ONLY states that the trunk release control is on the INSTRUMENT PANEL . It shows a round button that has trunk release printed twice around the button . Unfortunately , it doesn't show the exact location on the INSTRUMENT PANEL

with the engine turned off hold down the trip meter button on the right hand side of your instrument panel (0.0) swith on the ignition but not the engine then when service now appears press the minute button on the left side of the instrument panel and it will reset.
