basically, static electricity is caused by either having to many electrons or not enough. This is bad for electrons, and they want to find atoms to join up with, so they will "jump" from one object to another to find these atoms. This causes the spark, and therfore the shock

When you get zapped by static electricity what is happening?

When you get zapped by static electricity, it means that there is an imbalance of electric charge on your body or on the object you touch. This causes a sudden flow of electrons to even out the charge, resulting in a small but quick electric shock or spark.

Why do you get electric shocks from people?

It is static electricity build-up. When you, or other people, rub against an object with a certain property, it causes static electricity build-up, and whenever two people get close enough, when at least one has the build-up, the protons and electrons jump towards each other from each body, causing electric shock, or static electricity shock.

Is electricity a metal?

Electricity is not a metal; it is the flow of electrons. In static electricity, the particles in an object try to neutralize each other, which causes a shock when touched. Metals like copper are great conductors of electricity, and can be drawn in electrical wires.
