this is called a tropism, where the growth of a plant in a particular stimulus, (light in this case). A chemical called auxin causes the elongation of cells. When a shoot is illuminated from one side, auxin is transported down the shaded side. This shaded side then elongates more rapidly than the illuminated side, causing the shoot to bend towards the light. Also the stimulus(light) must be detected by the tip of the plant shoot or root.

The IAA in the stem of a plant diffuses towards the shaded side of the plant when light is shone. The IAA causes the shaded side of the plant stem to grow exponentially, which causes the stem to bend towards the light.

This occurs to maximise the amount of light the plant receives, useful for Photosynthesis, and plant growth.

The hormone gebrellin responsible for cell elongation is active in the cells away from light. This causes more elongation in these cells. Thus, these stems bend towards light.

How is the role of auxin in the bending of stems toward light?

Auxins move from their source into the rest of the plant, where they stimulate cell elongation. A higher concentration of auxins accumulate in the shaded part of a stem and causes the plant to move towards the light.

What process causes the plants stem to bend toward the light?

This is due to tropic movement(tropism) in plants in which the fixed part of a plant(such as stem) moves in response to a stimulus. If the stimulus is light(as you have asked) then it is termed as Phototropism. And further more stem shows positive phototropism.

A slender growth supporting a flower or plant?

The slender growth supporting a flower or plant is the stem. The stem is flexible and can grow to bend towards the sun.

How do the stem of a plant respond to light?

The shoot of a plant grows towards light and the roots away from light

Why do potato plants follow the sun?

I suspect that like most green plants the potato has gibberellins (growth hormones) in the stem that migrate to the side of the stem opposite the sun. On that side they stimulate stem growth, causing the stem to bend towards the sun.

Whih part of a plant holds it upright and moves o towards the light?

The stem.

Is the amount of bending influenced by the amount of time seedlings spend in the light?

Yes it is, the plants need for sunlight will bend the stem to increase its reception of light.

Plant organs and the response to stimuli?

It responses the light known as positive phototropism which means the stem grows towards the light

How do plants bend towards light?

There is a plant hormone called auxins. In a plant such as a sunflower, the auxins will distribute themselves on the dark side of the plant where they will cause the the expulsion of H+ ions decreasing the Ph of the cells on the dark side of the plant. This decrease in Ph will cause a weakening of the cell wall and swelling will occur ultimatly allowing the plant to move and organize itslef towards sun light.

Describe the various reactions of plants to light?

Phototropism is the response to light. It is achieved by the action of the hormone auxin. Auxin is made in the apical meristems, moves downward by active transport into the sone of elongation and generates grow by stimulating elongation. When all sides of the apical meristem are equally illuminated, growth of the stem is uniform and the stem grows straight. When the stem is unequally illuminated, auxin moves downward into the zone of elongation but concentrates on the shady side of the stem. Auxin that would have normally accumulated on the sunny side end up on the shady side. The higher the concentration of auxin in the shady side of the stem causes differential growth. Since auxin generates growth by stimulating elongation, the shady side grows more than the sunny side. When the shady side grows more than the sunny side, the stem would bend towards the light.

When a plant leans towards the sun it is a reaction of what?

plants lean towards the sun to gain nutrients, that is an adaptation. They also use th sun photosynthesis plants lean towards the sun for photosynthesis. When they leann towards the sun it is an adaptation

Why do bean seeds grow upward?

They grow upward because the growing stem has the ability to sense up and down, largely through bending of the stem in response to gravity and then grows faster on the inside of the bend and slower on the outside of the bend, causing the bend to straighten out and grow upward. Once in view of light they grow toward light, which is also usually up not down. These are evolutionary adaptations to help the plant get the energy it needs to survive after the "food" in the seed is consumed.
