Vitamin D deficiency results from inadequate dietary intake of preformed vitamin D, malabsorption of vitamin D, or too little exposure to sunlight. This deficiency may also occur in overcrowded urban areas in which smog limits sunlight penetration. Other conditions that can lead to Vitamin D Deficiency are habits such as smoking, diets which lack vitamin D rich foods, consumption of alchohol, stress and environmental factors.

The most common cause of vitamin deficiencies is simply not eating a balanced diet. Eating a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis will help prevent deficiencies.

Also, although not as common, is that some diseases and disorders can cause vitamin deficiencies.

See your primary care physician for more information on any persistent deficiency you may have for treatment and care.

Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by a number of factors.

The most common cause is lack of exposure to sunlight or UVB rays, which help to stimulate production of Vitamin D in the body.

Part of this could be on where one lives (not as much sun) or even something simple like using too much sunscreen - good sunscreen will prevent Vitamin D production. Kind of a catch 22, since too much sun exposure can also cause skin cancer and aging.

Dark skin people tend to be Vitamin D deficient because the melanin in their skin pigment absorbs the UVB rays. Another catch 22- if you get a good tan, you may actually decrease your Vitamin D production!

Overweight and obese people are more Vitamin D deficient because the Vitamin D is stored in their fat cells rather than making it into their bloodstream.

Also, elderly people have less Vitamin D production. After 40, the production level drops dramatically no matter how much sun you get.

And of course, not enough Vitamin D in your diet. The biggest sources of Vitamin D are cod liver oil, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines. How many of us eat a lot of that?

I have some interesting videos and articles about Vitamin D:

Factors that lead to vitamin C deficiency include:

  • Poor intake of vitamin C-rich vegetables and fruits: In the U.S., one third of all adults get less vitamin C from their diet than is recommended by the National Academy of Sciences, and 1 out of every 6 adults gets less than half the amount recommended.
  • Smoking and exposure to second hand smoke.
  • Excessive toxic exposure.
