First off, I am not a doctor. However, if you do not regularly wash your hands and regularly touch your mouth and/or nose, you have a higher chance of picking up the virus (or viri) that cause the common cold. If you have children and eat and drink after them, you are more likely to catch a cold since children are notorious for touching everything they can get their little hands on. If you do not get enough sleep, are under much stress, or if you do not eat well-balanced nutritional meals, your body is less able to fight off incoming germs that cause colds and flu.

You often catch colds because a cold is caused by a virus. Each time you catch a cold, your body makes antibodies that correspond to that virus. The first time it sees a virus, it takes time to make the antibodies needed to fight off that particular virus. Your body fights it off, and if it finds the same virus again, it can make the antibody needed before you get the symptoms of the cold. However, the virus always changes slightly, so there are many different kinds. You never catch the same cold twice.

There could be many reasons. The most common reason is that you are staying up too late or aren't getting enough sleep. Without sleep, your body cannot stay too healthy.

You could also be exercising a lot, which lowers the quality of your immune system. You could also just naturally have a weak immune system.

This question has probably been asked since the first time a cold or the flu made someone sick. After all, cold and flu season occurs when the weather is cold, so there must be a connection, right? Well, not quite. No matter how many times your mother and grandmother told you not to go out in the cold because you would catch a cold or the flu, it just doesn't work that way.

How it does work:

The truth is, the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. New studies indicate that people get sick with these viruses more often in the fall and winter season because flu viruses like it dry. In flu season the absolute humidity is lower than in the summer. [There is much more about this in the related questions on this page and below].

In addition to the new findings, it still may be partially due to some or all of the following: People stay inside in this season which makes them more likely to spread germs to one another simply due to proximity. When school is in session, kids are around each other all day and are not afraid to share their germs. With so many people in such close contact, the likelihood of passing germs is much higher when it is cold outside than when it is warm and people are outdoors more.

As mentioned above, there is also evidence now that viruses spread more easily through dry air. When it is cold outside, the air is drier both outdoors and inside (where people have their heaters on) and a low absolute humidity level is indicated as a reason that it is easier for some viruses to pass from one person to another at that time of year. But, it is not the cold weather that causes the cold, it just might make it easier to spread the virus.

The most important thing to remember during cold and flu season is to protect yourself and others against these germs when you are gathered with other people and/or out in public places. Cold and flu viruses are most often passed by contact between people, or touching what someone else touched. So, be sure to wash your hands often and avoid touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth before you wash them. See below for more information on washing your hands to remove germs.
