Vitrectomy is the surgical removal of the vitreous (transparent gel that fills the eye from the iris to the retina).
Painful
It may be necessary to remove the vitreous in order to replace the retina and restore vision.
Vitrectomy is typically performed in more complex cases of retinal detachment. During the procedure, the vitreous gel is removed, and the retina is reattached with the help of gas or silicone oil.
Yes, there is a procedure that uses a laser to "tack" a detached retina back onto the eye. That can restore sight in blind spots that result from a detached retina.
Detached Retina
Yes for example a detached retina.
laser retinopexy
there is still no treatment available for retinal problems researches are being held on animals regarding retinal chip transplant I disagree with the first answer. My son was born with a completely detached retina in one eye and a partially detached retina in the other eye. He had no visual response at birth. But after repeated vitrectomy surgery in each eye he now has some sight in one eye. He is still a baby so we don't know exactly what he can see but at 4 months of age he is reaching out and grabbing at objects that are presented to him. We are waiting on the outcome of the surgery in the other eye but his surgeon was very pleased with how the surgery went. We are working with a vision therapist to make the most of the vision he has. So I would say it really depends on how much of a detachment there is. You need to visit a retina specialist to see what can be done.
