What challenges did Mohammad face in the early years of Islam?

In the early years of Islam, Muhammad, peace be upon him was taunted and mocked in every way possible. Though he had the protection of his clan, he was still subjected to torture. Once, while he was praying near the Kaaba, Abu Lahab threw the entrails of a sacrificed camel over him. Abu Lahab's wife, Umm Jamil would also regularly dump filth outside his door. On the death of his son, he was branded 'abtar', "one with no son".

The Prophet eventually lost his uncle Abu Talib who had adamantly protected him, and shortly after, his beloved wife, Khadijah, passed away as well.

Furthermore, in the year, 617 the Makkans imposed a socio-economic boycott on the clan of Banu Hashim, it lasted for 3 years. In these years, the people of Banu Hashim were sent to an area called "Shib Abi Talib or Shib Abi Hashim". There was nothing to eat and buying from or selling to the people of Banu Hashim was banned.
