Leonardo da vinci was, first of all, the son of a peasant girl and a rich young notary [at the time an accountant/attorney/worker with documents]. He was not made legitimate (that is, claimed by his father to inheritance), though he mostly grew up in his father's or grandfather's house. One mark against him. He later had to sue his half-brothers in the court of Florence for any claim to his father's estate.
Although he was physically strong, he was also a dandy of sorts, and liked to dress in very colorful, extravagant clothes. That was considered quite out of his station as an "artisan".
He was probably rather candid in his keeping the company of men, and was jailed for two months after having been anonymouslyaccused of not being straight, along with a relative of the Duke's mother, all of whom were the diMedici family. The Duke never requested any work by Leonardo and later refused to send Leonardo with the other artists of Verrocchio's shop to Rome in 1482.
At that time, Leonardo was staying in a house owned by the church and living on credit. He went to Milan to seek a better fortune as a musician.
When his benefactor in Milan was driven from the city, Leonardo had to flee as well. When the French took over cities in what was only later to become Italy, Leo had to try his best to get a job with them. He could only use his savings in the meantime.
