The appointment of U.S. Grant as General-in-Chief in March 1864.

He ended the system of prisoner-exchange, so that the Confederates were bound to run out of manpower first.

He also authorised the scorched-earth policy to attack the civilian infrastructure that supported the Confederate armies in the field - first Phil Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley, then Sherman in Georgia and South Carolina.
