Almost all of us have been coding since our school days. We have learned a number of programming languages and got ample practice in them too. In college, to prepare for placements, we focused on a particular programming language for competitive programming but had to keep up with the other ones too. So, after so many years of coding, one must think they are good enough to be a good coding specialist. Are they really? To understand, let’s see some characteristics of a good coding specialist.

Have knowledge of a large tech stack - A project is made up of many different fields of work, each of them requiring a different technology. So basic knowledge in different fields helps one work in a team.

Enjoy solving puzzles - Puzzles are made to work our brains and the same is needed from a coder. Whether it be coming up with a solution, or fixing bugs, the ability to solve problems, even under pressure goes a long way for a good coder.

Love learning - The first point mentioned having knowledge of several technologies, but then one can’t know everything. So the love for learning comes in handy here where the thirst for knowledge can push you towards success.

Good communication skills - A good coder must work with many people in a team. There, good communication skills are required for teamwork. Apart from that, providing proper documentation of a program such that it is understandable to others is a responsibility of a good coder. Understanding and being able to put forward one’s point whether it be in writing or verbally is a must for any professional.

Confidence - A company or even a project is run by many people. Each person there has an equal contribution to its success. So, a good coding specialist must have the confidence to speak up about any innovative ideas or even the drawbacks of others’ ideas.

Interest in the business - When working for a company, the first and foremost thing we should know is what they do. This, will not only help you develop products accordingly, but also make improvements to it so as to meet the customers’ needs.

Be a part of the team - Being a part of a team has many benefits. To start with, it helps divide the workload among the members. It also gives each and every member the opportunity to learn from their fellow team members. Lastly, it results in the sharing of ideas which came from different perspectives, thereby giving better results than individual work.

Understand the importance of deadlines - The prime reason to understand the importance of deadlines is to complete projects within their stipulated time. But in a way, being able to meet deadlines provides the personal benefit of having a good impression on one’s seniors and the company.
