The planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are solid, made of rock, minerals and metals. They may have cores of molten material as the Earth does. The planets beyond Mars, that is, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are made of gases. They are referred to as the "gas giants." Pluto, a solid object, is no longer a "planet" within the new definition of "planet." It has been demoted to what is now called a "dwarf planet."
