The cancer cell must be able to:

  1. Be self sufficient in terms of growth signals (It needs to tell itself to grow)
  2. It needs to ignore anti-growth signals
  3. It needs to be able to move around the body and form new tumors
  4. It needs to be able to replicate indefinitely
  5. It needs to stimulate the growth of blood vessels from neighboring tissue to the tumor
  6. It needs to evade apoptosis (Cell death)

The basic properties of a cancerous cell are ones that will grow at an increased rate. They will slowly overtake the good cells and then effect internal parts until they have consumed all that is available unless treatment is sought.

There are in total six common properties of all cancers, which are known as the hallmarks of cancer.

Pick any two you like.

  1. Independence from growth factors: cancer cells drive their growth themselves
  2. Immunity to growth inhibiting signals: cancer cells blatantly ignore any signals from outside which would make any normal cell kill itself (apoptose)
  3. Shutdown of DNA-protective mechanisms: systems which normally kill a cell if there are severe mutations in its genome are non-functional in cancer cells
  4. Angiogenesis: in order to grow, cancer cells need nutrients from blood; they stimulate growth of blood vessels into the tumour for this purpose
  5. Immortality: cancer cells do not differentiate, enter cell senescence and ultimately die like healthy cells do
  6. Metastasis: cancer cells rupture through tissues from the original (primary) tumour site and spread to different sites in the body, growing new tumours

What damage does radiation do?

Radiation exposure causes damage to the cells of your body, which can mutate them. Mutated cells are sometimes referred to as cancer cells, and thus radiation can give you cancer. There are different effects from different kinds of radiation, but mutating cells is the basic form of damage that radiation does.

Which type of cells are quite easy to grow in a lab?

According to Biologists, cells containing bacteria or disease are easier to grow in labs than normal cells because it has multiplying properties. An example is cancer cells because the disease continues to spread to other cells.

What is pre cancer cells?

pre cancer cells are cells with an abnormal appearance suggestive of an increased cancer risk. These cells are not cancerous by themselves alone.
