You can join one of two "allegiances": Empire and Republic
Each side has four classes, each class has a class on the other side that is the same, meaning it plays exactly like the other side (with different names for spells and such). For example the Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight are the same, just with different spell names.

Imperial Agent | Smuggler
Bounty Hunter | Trooper
You can then choose from a variety of species that are available for that class. Once you level a species, it becomes available to all new characters.
