The chemical was DDT, an insecticide, once used to destroy crop eating insects. The chemical got into the watershed, where it contaminated the fish the eagles ate. This poison caused the eagle's egg shells to be too thin, making them easy to break, so fewer eaglets were surviving. Since DDT has now been banned, the bald eagle has made a remarkable comeback. It is no longered considered an endangered species, but rather a species whose status varies from place to place as threatened, to species of least concern.
