In July 1378 in Florence, Italy, the so-called "Ciompi" launched their revolt against the stablishment in general, and against the Medici in particular. The Pallominy family was a rival family of the Medici and supported the Ciompi as an attempt to overthrow them from power. The Ciompi were briefly succesfusful, however they were defeated shortly after by the counter-revolution led by Salvestro De Medici, who reinstated the Medici family to the control of the city's government.

For reasons such as: it glorified the city of Florence, it beautified the city in many ways, and it gave great prestige to the family's name.
The Medici were a banking family from Florence, Italy. They gave loans in turn for more money (interest). And they were very smart with their monmey....paying for artist such as Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. Well you see there is a really good story behind that. For starters the Florentines were into swinging, so they thought if the drove the Medici family from the city they would be able to have sex with them. Also, the horses needed some more exercise so they thought it would be good for them to ride out of the city. 1494 was a period of witches and the Florentines suspected the Medici's to be witches so they had to get the, out of the city as quick as possible before they were turned into cabbages.

They were constantly competing for power so when the huge family of one city state, like the Medici's, commissioned the artwork of a great artist another major family in a different city state would do the same with another great artist. This allowed art and thus the Renaissance to greatly progress.
In 1914, Girolamo Savonarola had come to the conclusion that the Medici family had to much power in Florence because of their incredible banking and economic systems. Savonarola began to preach to the people of Florence of his ideas and philosophy. He gained many followers and eventually built up enough support to overthrow the Medici Family. He then went on to appoint very famous Machiavelli to be his secretary.
