Clinton's Army
After defeating General Washington at the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777, General Howe captured and occupied the city of Philadelphia on Sept. 26, 1777.
On December 29, 1778, an expeditionary corps from Clinton's army in New York captured Savannah, Georgia. An attempt by French and American forces to retake Savannah failed on October 9, 1779. Clinton then besieged Charleston, capturing it on May 12, 1780. With relatively few casualties, Clinton had seized the South's biggest city and seaport, paving the way for what seemed like certain conquest of the South.

In 1780, Charleston was a significant city in South Carolina. It served as a major port and a center of trade, culture, and politics during the American Revolutionary War. In May 1780, Charleston was besieged and captured by British forces, marking one of the significant events of the war in the southern theater. This defeat had a profound impact on the course of the conflict in the region.
