Well I'm taking my second year of Game Design- It180 in a technical college. It's just basic learning so far, then comes the real stuff like advanced graphic programming etc. You will need courses like these to even hope to get into a art institution. Which is pretty much a necessity if you want to become a designer for a major label.
There are no classes that are required to become a game designer, but they would not hurt your chances of getting a job. The best classes to take is your local colleges classes on programming.
