I can only think of a couple of reasons anyone would want to destroy a coin instead of spending it - perhaps in a chemistry experiment or to slice it apart to see what the inside looks like.

In any case, most modern coins are only worth face value, so you would only be losing that amount by doing something that would cause damage. "Modern" would encompass cents and nickels dated roughly 1955 or later, dimes and quarters starting in 1965, and halves and dollars starting in 1971.

Many - but not all - coins with earlier dates may be worth more because they are interesting to collectors, are made of a precious metal such as silver, or both.

I can't destroy any type of physical or digital coins. However, in the metaphorical context of cutting off support or resources, any currency, physical or digital, can lose its value or utility if not properly managed or supported.

Is it legal to extract silver from coins?

In most countries it is illegal to deliberately damage, deface or destroy money.

What acid is best for cleaning coins?

Don't clean coins. Cleaning coins will do nothing but destroy value. Cleaning can be the difference between a $100 coin and a $5 coin. Cleaning will never increase a coin's value, it can only destroy it. There is never any reason why you should clean collectible coins unless you are a metal dectectorist getting the dirt off of a dug coin and even then you should only use water.

What are chemical compounds for cleaning coins?

Vinegar helps on coins. As a general rule, coins should not be cleaned, as such an action will significantly reduce or even destroy a coin's value. It is possible to use an ultrasonic cleaner for gold coins but care must be taken to avoid rubbing the coin.

Can you smelt coins of the realm such as silver crowns or is this not allowed?

How to clean a silver dollar?

You don't. Cleaning coins will only destroy their collector value. Since nearly all silver dollars are collectable coins (worth more than scrap) you would only be destroying their value, it is best to leave them uncleaned.

What cleans a penny better lemon juice Coca-Cola or vinegar?

If you are trying to make your coins "more collectable", don't do it.Cleaning coins with any chemicals you have at home will damage the surface and destroy whatever collector's value they may have. You'll be left with a lot of bright, shiny coins that are worth only 1¢ each.

How do you melt silver from Canadian coins?

You don't. That is against the law. It is a violation of both the Currency Act and The Canadian Criminal Code to deface or destroy a Canadian coin. The law states: ''no person shall melt down, break up or use otherwise than as currency any coin that is legal tender in Canada.'' By the way, if you mutilate the coins, they cannot be used any longer. The Mint won't take damaged coins. They will with bills, but not coins.

How can you magnetize US coins?

No. "Magnetic" means that a piece of metal is itself magnetized, so coins are never magnetic. However metals like steel and nickel are attracted to a magnet. But in the case of US coins, most of them contain a high enough concentration of other metals (copper today, silver in the past) that they're not attracted to a magnet. The only exception to this were the famous 1943 1-cent coins that were made from steel because copper was needed for the war effort.
