You don't have to attend any specific school in particular to become a game designer, but there are a few things you should look for in a school before deciding which to attend. These are not in any particular order.
1. School's course of study. If you want to be a game designer, you want to study game design. Though you can also gain a great deal of knowledge from a computer science program, you may miss out on important coursework you would find in a game -specific degree program.
2. Make sure the program is accredited. Due to the overall popularity of the game design degree, there are many "for-profit" institutions that offer the degree but are not accredited. Attending any institution without accreditation would be throwing your money away.
3. Make sure either the program, or the school itself has notoriety. One of the best ways to do this is to attend a school that is ranked highly but the U.S. News and World report, or , is listed in the Princeton Review. Then you know you are getting your money's worth.
It depends on the college but most are not that expensive.
