Ivy Tech Community College has a mortuary science course if you are interested in just the short way out. But most morticians do indeed operate which does require a medical degree. This is where I would check out IUPUI. That stands for Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis. They have excellent medical training and hands on experience.
