Pet Hedgehogs:

Domesticated hedgehogs come 136 colors, and more are being developed as we speak (through dilute gene breeding).

There are two main types; White-Bellied and Algerian. White bellied are lighter in color, and have small masks. Algerians have darker masks, darker color, mottled skin, and dark boots. When referring to an algerian color, simply place "Algerian" before the color.

Standard White Bellied Colors (darkest to lightest) -

  • Salt n' Pepper (very rare, VERY few hedgehogs are this color and most which are called salt n' pepper are actually dark grey)
  • Dark Grey
  • Grey
  • Chocolate (dark brown)
  • Brown or "Oak Brown"
  • Cinnamon
  • Dark Cinnicot
  • Black eyed Cinnicot
  • Ruby eyed Cinnicot
  • Champagne
  • Apricot
  • Pale Apricot

Standard Algerian Colors (darkest to lightest) -

  • Algerian Black (this color is EXTREMELY rare! Most "blacks" you will "see" are actually dark greys.)
  • Alerigan Dark Grey
  • Algerian Grey
  • Algerian Chocolate (dark brown)
  • Algerian Brown
  • Algerian Cinnamon
  • Algerian Dark Cinnicot
  • Algerian Cinnicot
  • Algerian Champagne
  • Algerian Apricot
  • Algerian Pale Apricot

Dilute colors, such as opal/blue-amber/amber/lilac/lilac-cream/cream are being developed now but are extremely uncommon.

- Patterns -

  • Pinto patterns are patches of white quills, with white skin beneath. Same thing as pinto markings in horses. Types of pinto -
Regular - A hedgehog with white patches of skin that should be symmetrical on both sides.

Tobiano Pinto - A hedgehog with irregular and unsymmetrical patches of white quills.

Uber pinto - A hedgehog with a pinto pattern consuming most of the body, showing very little regular quill color. It should be a small patch of color.

Reverse pinto - A coloring in which the front of the hedgehog is white, and the rump has regular colored quills.

Total Pinto - The pinto pattern is so extensive the whole hedgehog is white, except for their eyes which remain dark.

Split face - This occurs when pinto patterns occur on the pigment of the face, resulting in half the face being colored, the other half white. This is tagged on before the description of the base color. This pinto color is "rare" and highly coveted among breeders and enthusiasts.

Blaze Face - This occurs when pinto patterns occur on the pigment of the face, resulting in white markings in the form of a blaze (white stripe). This is tagged on before the description of the base color.

Pinto face - This occurs when pinto patterns occur on the pigment of the face, causing the whole face to be white. This is tagged on before the description of the base color.

  • Snowflake is a pattern of white quills "sprinkled" throughout normal colored quills, all on colored skin with dark masks/boots. Simular to roaning in horses. Varying degrees are seen, more snowlfake pattern is preferred (more completely white quills). Having a few white quills on the rump or horns does not mean a hedgehog is a snowflake. Some snowflakes over white bellied colors have special names in the hedgehog show ring/among breeders.
  • Whites are actually extreme snowflakes, but are typically put into their own category because of popularity. They have dark skin and masks, but have almost 100% white quills. There should be no more than 10 colored quills on the hedgehog.
  • Double Whites are still whites, but are put into their own category because 100% of their quills are totally white. They can be told apart from total pintos because they still have dark masks/skin/boots.
  • "Party colored" or pinto-snowflakes are those animals with both above patterns. They are very uncommon.

These patterns can occur on any standard color.

Then, of course, there are albinos (devoid of any pigment).

Wild hedgehogs: Color will vary, depending on the species.
