yellowjackets
Yellowjackets originated in North America and are part of the wasp family Vespidae. They are believed to have evolved from a common ancestor shared with other wasps and bees. While they can be found in various regions, their presence is most notable in the United States, where several species thrive in diverse habitats. Yellowjackets are particularly known for their aggressive behavior and their ability to build nests in a variety of locations, including underground and in trees.
In Kansas, common types of wasps include paper wasps, yellowjackets, and mud daubers.
Both yellowjackets and honeybees are social insects in the order hymenoptera. They build nests that can be home to thousands of individual insects. Within a nest there are a few dozen to several thousand sterile female workers who gather food, expand the nest, and feed the young and a single fertile queen who lays eggs. In the fall males, called drones, hatch along with new, virgin queens. Males die shortly after mating. In temperate climates the nests die off in the fall and only the new queens survive winter. Both groups of insects have a diet primarily of nectar, though yellowjackets are also partly predatory. Female honeybees and yellowjackets are also both capable of delivering a painful sting.
