In the original book, and in the 1902/1903 stage version, by author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919], the shoes are Silver Slippers. But those involved in the making of the film found the silver to wash out in comparison to the riotous colors in their Technicolor production. And so red was the color of choice.
