Gold is a confusing and picky colour, but i'd say a deep, magenta purple would look very elegant, and surprisingly red actually looks nice if it's a good maroon shade. For cool colors seafoam green looks very cute (reminds me of the beach) and pale sky blue is absolutely brilliant with gold.
Lots of colors go well with gold, it depends on the room theme.
Best use not too bright and chemical colors. semi-lavender sky blue, old pink, black, white, earthy reds all go well with gold. With strong red, it might make you think of a Chinese restaurant, with sky-blue the feel will be grand, clear and sunny.
You might also think of a contrast in terms of materials. like gold and white plaster, gold and dark wood, or even brown dirt (dark brown paint with sand in it). As long as the combination 'means' something to you, it will be good.
I would say it goes best with black, white or maybe silver. In jewelry, it goes best with silver and platinum.
