Start with the girl. Ask her favourite colours... if that isn't possible, check her wardrobe. You will se a definite colour trend there.
If you are decorating for a young person, it would be best not to go for a themed room... young women change their minds fairly quickly... so paint the walls a good neutral and add accessories in the latest trend as often as you like.
Colour combinations that look nice in a bedroom is very subjective. Sometimes people choose to keep walls neutral and accessorize to a particular theme or vibrant colour. Other people enjoy deep or bright coloured walls, with neutral accessories.

It would still look blue :)
Pink or orange would probably look best with yellow. Just be sure to not over-do the pink/orange. Other shades of yellow might also look good in the girls room also.
My best suggestion is to open your closet and take a good look at your colour palette. If you are painting a bedroom for yourself, I recommend you pick a colour or colours you like and are comfortable with. No amount of it being a "trendy colour" could ever make you like a colour you don't. If you are looking for a good idea for a bedroom, and do not feel confident in making the choice yourself, go to a good bed and bath or Linens store and take a look around at the bedding sets. They are designed to fit general tastes, include some trendy colours and good designs. Draw your colour scheme from those, but remember, work from the ground up. There are a limited number of carpet colours, there are more colour selections in drapes and fabric and exponentially more colours of paint.
Colour combination is the most important part of colour theory and designing with colour. It always comes down to personal judgement and how you look at colours. There are some guidelines. A useful page is 'colours on the web'.

The designer would assess the existing style and theme of the bedroom. Whether it's modern, contemporary, rustic, minimalist, or traditional, the headboard should harmonize with the overall design scheme. The designer would consider the dimensions of the bed and the available space in the bedroom to ensure the headboard neither overwhelms nor appears too small in the room.
