A dark brown horse. Possibly black. Possibly something with patches of the other color.

According to a nifty foal color calulator that you can find a link to in the related links, the foal has a 70% chance of being bay, 24% chance of being black and a 7% chance of being chestnut.

It depends on if it is homozygous or heterozygous. Homozygous means it will have the same trait. Heterozygous mean it will have two different traits. So say that if the stallion had a dominant trait for black and a recessive trait for chestnut, and the mare had two recessive traits for chestnut then the foal could either be heterozygous black or homozygous chestnut. But if the stallion had to dominant traits for black and the mare had two recessive traits for chestnut the the foal would be heterozygous black no matter what because either way it will receive the dominant trait for black. Dominant trait will ALWAYS over power recessive traits.

Both the black (a) allele and the chestnut (e) allele are recessive. The black (a) allele

is at the Agouti site along with A (bay), At (brown), + (wild bay).

The chestnut allele (e) is located at the extension site along with E (not chestnut).

We know the stallion is aaEe or aaEE.

The mare is XXee as we can't tell from looking at her what her genetics is at the agouti site.

If the stallion is aaEE the foal will not be chestnut however, the color will be controlled by the genetics of the mare at the extension site.

If the stallion is aaEe then there is a 50% chance of a chestnut foal and a 50% chance that the foal will not be chestnut. Again the genetics of the mare at the

agouti site will determine the color of the foal.

Since the stallion has "always thrown color" we'll assume that he is homozygous for

tobiano which means that the foal will also be tobiano. (Caveat 1. The stallion could also be heterozygous for either tobiano, overo or both and have bred so few solid mares that the fact that he has always thrown color leads to the erroneous conclusion that he is homozygous.)

Since the stallion is ee we have no idea what his genetics is at the agouti site so

he could be aaee, Aaee or AAee.

Your black mare is either aaEE or aaEe.

The foal will have a 50% chance of being chestnut if the mare is Ee at the extension site. If she is EE the foal cannot be chestnut.

If the mare is EE or she passes the E allele on to the foal then the potential

non-chestnut color of the foal lies with the genetics of the stallion. If he is aaee then the foal will be black, if he is Aaee or Ataee the foal will have a 50% chance of being black. If the stallion is any combination of A or At

(AA, AAt or AtAt) the foal will not be black.

You may want to ask the stallion owner if the stallion has ever produced a black foal which may give you a better ability to gauge the chances of a black, bay, or brown foal.

You cannot predict this. However studies show that the colour of the mare is often more dominant and the gene will be passed on to the foal.

Is it possible to have purebred palominos?

Palomino isn't a breed of horse, it is a colour. Answer 2: As stated above Palomino is a color, not a breed. The Palomino horse registries are color registries, not breed associations. You get Palomino coloring by breeding a horse with the cream gene to a chestnut and you should get a palomino. Any breed that carries both the cream and chestnut colorings can produce a palomino.
