What combat stat is best?

A lot of people train mostly on strength so they can do a lot of damage, others try to train attack to weild powerful weapons quickly, and others train defence to make sure they don't take as much damage. People say magic is too underpowered since the most possible damage done is too low, and that meleers can just wear range armor to gain the advantage, and the attack that does the max hit costs about 2k in runes. Ranged is more recommended for PvM instead of PvP since most players wear melee armour. People say melee is the best stat since it can hit the highest amount of damage, ranged armour doesn't have any disadvantages for melee, letting meleers kill magers easily, and Jagex seems to update it more than the other two.
