There are, of course, people who for various reasons are not raised by their parents, and such people would have less opportunity to honor their fathers and mothers). Step-parents and guardians (and older siblings) are also included in the obligation to honor, but not to the same degree as one's parents.

The Fifth Commandment is, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you." You should honor, trust, and obey your parents for they are here to bring you closer to God and His word. God has entrusted them to care for you and your wellbeing. All God does is for a reason, and his purpose for putting you with your parents is His own. You should stand up for your parents and show them honor and live in their name just as you live in God's. Only through this can one become a "Child of God."

He interprets this commandment as not only a directive for children but also as a reflection of one's relationship with authority and society. Mather argues that honoring parents fosters respect for God's authority and promotes moral order within the community. Additionally, he highlights the spiritual and social benefits that arise from adhering to this commandment.
