The components of fitness include such things as speed, stamina (endurance, aerobic fitness), flexibility, acceleration, power, strength. The beep test is primarily a fitness test of the aerobic (endurance) system. As the test requires you to stop, turn and accelerate after every 20 meters, the anaerobic energy system (speed and power) also has a role, particularly as the speed increases.
The test has been variously described as the beep or bleep test, multi-stage fitness test or MSFT/MST, 20 meter shuttle run test, yo-yo endurance test, PACER and Aero tests. In French it is called the 'Test de Luc-Léger'
The 'Beep Test' is a measure of VO2 Max, or essentially, cardiovascular fitness. It involves an individual running for as long as they can between two markers, placed 20 meters apart, at a gradually increasing pace. Level 1 starts of fairly easy, only a very light jogging pace, however after level eight the test starts to get harder.
It is an estimate of the VO2 max of the person doing it, and a test of cardiovascular fitness.
It is mainly cardio to build up confidence and stamina.
