Best Answer

Sodium and oxygen are combined to form some kind of oxide of sodium, but there are three different ones. The specific kind produced will be determined by the conditions under which oxidation occurs. When burned in air, sodium will form sodium peroxide(Na2O2). If there is a limited amount of oxygen, sodium oxide (Na2O) will form. Lastly, sodium superoxide (NaO2) will be produced if sodium is burned in oxygen under pressure. Wikipedia has some extra information, and a link is provided.
