The first chapter of The Hunger Games just explains what Katniss Everdeen does before the have the Reaping Day "lottery" done. The "lottery" is used to choose who will be tributes at the Hunger Games that year.
The conflict is Katniss must compete in the Hunger Games, where she must survive being hunted down and she has to kill Peeta, who gave her bread when she starved.
PLMD occures most often in first stage of sleep but can be seen in other stages as well.

Katniss and Gale have known each other for a long while. It does not state in the book when or how they first met.
Mockingjay, the final book in the Hunger Games series, came out in August of 2010. There aren't any others coming out after that. The first book is called The Hunger Games and the second Catching Fire - make sure to read the in that order, because there are huge events in almost every chapter.
