The Know-Nothings were no type of Catholic, to be perfectly honest, they were anti-Catholic.
In the 1850s, Pope Pius IX (May 13, 1792 - February 7, 1878) contributed a marble block as a memorial stone for the Washington Monument. The Know-Nothings, an anti-Catholic political party, are believed to have stolen the stone in March 1854 and thrown it into the Potomac River.
The Know Nothing Party failed primarily due to internal divisions and a lack of a cohesive platform beyond their anti-immigrant and nativist sentiments. As the political landscape shifted, especially with the rise of the Republican Party and the looming issue of slavery, the Know Nothings struggled to maintain relevance. Additionally, their inability to address broader economic and social issues alienated potential supporters, leading to a decline in their influence by the late 1850s.
