Humans are a major factor. I am not an expert, but I can help a little bit. Humans cut down trees that woodpeckers nest in and feed from. Destroying habitats, polluting skies, and killing prey contribute to the demise of the woodpecker.
The pileated woodpecker is not in decline. Listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN.

MAN!
Not all woodpeckers obtain their food from trees, some feed on the ground, but they do need trees for nesting. So the removal of trees from areas where woodpeckers live would be a factor leading to their extinction. Another factor would be the overuse of insecticides as has already happened in the reduction of numbers of some species of birds.
If people keep on hunting the ivory billed woodpecker, then they could die out very easily.
Man. We destroyed most of their bottomland riverine habitats throughout the south, leading to the near extinction of this species.

what is a woodpeckers habitat
Woodpeckers are carnivores.
Woodpeckers are non migratory birds.
When human contributes into global warming some animals like polar bears and those who cannot bear heat may cause mass extinction
Woodpeckers are, but chipmunks are a different species.
