They converted their manufacturing plants to being war manufacturing plants. They did things like making uniforms, boots, ammo, guns, parts for planes, tanks and vehicles. They even assembled K rations for the boys on the war front. You name it: if it had to be made the manufacturers gave up making their own products to help the war effort.
