Thomas J. Watson Sr. was the president of the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (a.k.a. CTR or C-T-R). He began his tenure as the General Manager of CTR in 1914 and was named President in 1915. He renamed the company the International Business Machines company in 1924.
CTR was formed in 1911 by Charles Flint as a merger between:
- The Tabulating Machine Company; founded in 1896 by Herman Hollerith in the Washington D.C. area.
- The Computing Scale Company; founded in 1891 by Orange Ozias in the Dayton, OH area.
- The International Time Recording Company; an acquisition of Bundy Manufacturing Company, the Standard Time Stamp Company, and the Willard and Frick Manufacturing Company. Organized in 1900 by George W. Fairchild. ITR also acquired the Dey Time Register Company in 1907.
