In June of 1862, Confederate President Jefferson Davis replaced PTG Beauregard with Braxton Bragg. Davis believed that Beauregard was not aggressive enough and should have made a stand at Corinth. A closer look at the situation reveals that the surprise evacuation was the best thing that could be done. If a siege had been placed on Corinth, Beauregard's small army in comparison to the Union troops chasing him, would have been captured. Beauregard chose to retreat from Corinth to fight another day.
Robert E. Lee would be appointed the General in Chief of all Confederate armies in February of 1865. Prior to that he was only the general commanding the Army of Northern Virginia and President Jefferson Davis was commander in chief and therefore the head of the armies. Lee would only be answerable to him in his new position.
Jefferson had lived under a king who might be called a tyrant. More important, there was no way to end his reign, except revolution. Jefferson decided that people had a right to choose their own government and fought to make it happen. Jefferson was brilliant and interested in many things. He resented government interference on his life. He wanted a minimal government that would only do what could only be done by government. He especially resented encroachments on personal freedom. He knew what is like to live under a repressive and unresponsive government.

It is unclear what Americans could have done to avoid the Great Depression. The hard times during this time period were little fault of American citizens, but of the government. The only thing in retrospect they could have done was elect a different president.

The idea that we COULD have done differently is nonsense. Rather, Free Will is the idea that we SHOULD (have) do(ne) differently (better). This is important and possible to understand and apply. This is the core of the 350-page book on Free Will by Maurits (Moshe-Mordechai) van Zuiden.
