I have a 2002 Nissan Altima and under warranty thank god they had to replace the Power Steering rack and pinion..also have had a new engine and transmission something done with the rear end under recall..car is a lemon...it could have something to do with the rack and pinion not sure how to fix but probably the answer

Check the power steering fluid to see if it needs to be filled. If not, then you may need a new power steering pump.
Since They Are Both Hydrolic fluids nothing will happen it will work normally for a short amount of time
Have you checked the fluid level? Have you changed the filter and fluid as normal maintenance?
