Actually, holland did not used to be the name of the country. It was the name of the province that lies in the west of present Holland. The country itself was called the United Netherlands. But all the trade and exploring commenced in the province of Holland, so when traders went to other countries and said they were from 'Holland' The others thought that was the name of the country. It kinda grew on us. The name 'Holland' itself for the province most likely comes from the vikings after fighting several wars with them.
