After (not during) WW 1, The the Empire of Austria-Hungary was divided into several smaller countries. After WW 2, the Russians turned the occupied zone in Germany that was under their control into the German Democratic Republic. So after WW 2, Germany became divided into the (western) German Federal Republic and the (Communist) German Democratic Republic, usually called East Germany. Also, the Ottoman Empire was split up into several countries after WW 1, although it must be said that many of those countries had already been autonomous or practically independent for many years before.
During World War II, countries like France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Poland were affected by German occupation. These countries faced varying degrees of oppression, resistance, and collaboration with the occupying forces.
Actually, not one but two countries were at war with France. The most prominent was the then German empire which fell apart after the war and the Austrio-Hungary Empire which also met its demise after the war. France also fought the Ottoman Empire in the middle east.
The First World War begain in 1914, but the United States of America entered the war much later on, in 1917. It allied itself with the British Empire, Kingdom of Italy, the French Republic and the Russian Empire. These countries were fighting the war against a rival alliance of countries called the "Central Powers" - this included the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire.
Some of the countries and empires that do not appear in the postwar map of 1919 are the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Russian Empire. These empires were dismantled or significantly reduced in size as a result of the First World War and the subsequent peace treaties. New countries and borders emerged in their place, reflecting the political changes and territorial adjustments that occurred during and after the war.
