Actually, USSR is NOT just another name for Russia. USSR stands for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and is an agglomeration of a whole lot of countries, including Russia. It was formed in 1922 and disbanded after the fall of communism in 1991
The Axis fought the Allies. The Allies were many countries, some of which were only involved for part of the war. Chief amongst the Allies were Great Britain, her Empire and Commonwealth, the USSR, the USA and France. But the Axis countries also fought countries such as Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Thailand (it was called Siam then), China, Greece etc. So World War Two was truly a world war.

Russia was the largest of the countries that were part of the USSR. In 1991, the USSR broke up and these countries, including Russia, all became independent.
